Chris Randles Interviewed by Develop3D Popular UK-based Develop3D magazine interviewed SpaceClaim CEO and President Chris Randles in its April 13th issue. During the interview, Chris talked about the key issues that separate SpaceClaim from traditional CAD. "The first is that we have always focused on expanding the market for 3D, not replacing existing CAD, and we still hold true to that mantra. Secondly, as we develop subsequent releases we are creating a product that is different from today's CAD packages in more ways than just being direct modelling versus feature-based modelling. We consider today that we have the best and most mature direct modelling solution and the most accessible and powerful tools. We have done a lot of work over the last year with big customers modelling and editing large models and assemblies, so I don't think you can say simple means underpowered... Our latest news is that we have just got permission from Toyota to name them as a customer, who joins firms like Tyco [now called TE Connectivity], LG Electronics, and Alstrom." |

Media Coverage: Applying Lean to Product Development (Design News) SpaceClaim is used as an example of a lean product development tool in this article. "Rather than mapping lean manufacturing principles to product development, engineering teams need to consider information flow and knowledge capture to truly reduce inefficiencies and optimize the process... Awareness of lean practices has been amplified thanks to mounting pressure on companies to get products to market faster, often using fewer engineering resources and faced with tighter R&D budgets... Modeling tools like SpaceClaim can facilitate set-based design techniques, which let engineers explore diverse design alternatives before committing to detailed design." ... Find Out More >> |

Media Coverage: SpaceClaim Engineer 2011 Review (Develop3D) SpaceClaim 2011's assembly performance improvements were driven by customers in automotive, aerospace, and defence industries. Users can now import assemblies as lightweight models, caching the translated precise geometry to disk to save memory. Also, users can now unload reference parts on-the-fly to boost performance… During the last four years we've seen SpaceClaim change from being a general-purpose tool designed to manipulate 'dumb' geometry into something more intriguing. ... VICURA was founded in January of 2011, having formerly served as global Powertrain Division of General Motors and the Powertrain group for Saab. VICURA is an engineering company providing driveline design through manufacturing services to automotive, marine, construction and commercial customers. The company's goal is to be the leading provider of transmission systems globally, and it certainly has the pedigree to make that happen.
"SpaceClaim is very efficient in helping me sort out what I need to test and I am saving about 80% of my time that otherwise would have been spent in iterative loops with the CAD designers. Customers are very impressed when they can see the proposed product design realistically through SpaceClaim and KeyShot and it clearly highlights the work we have done. It provides confidence to the customer that we have invested significant time and applied our expertise. Before we used SpaceClaim, when we showed our concepts as ordinary CAD models, the customers always felt there was a lot more work to do." |
